“Legal highs are chemical compounds that often replicate the effects of illegal drugs. They are called legal highs because they can be sold legally as long as the label says ‘not for human consumption’.

People might think that because they are sold legally, this means that they are safe. This is not the case; users can never be certain what they are taking and what the effects might be.”

A recent inquest heard how a father of three had been found dead by his wife after using a white powder found to be acetyl fentanyl. The drug designed to bypass the laws as it is legal to buy is five times stronger than heroin and fifteen times stronger than morphine.

A post-mortem examination revealed the man had died as a result of the “toxic effects of a drug cocktail” in his blood.
